Brad Grenoble named new Johnston City basketball coach
By Pete Spitler, The Southern
Tuesday, July 22, 2008 11:26 PM CDT
JOHNSTON CITY - Southern Illinois Miners sales and marketing director Brad Grenoble was named the new boys basketball coach in a unanimous decision by the Johnston City school board Monday.

Grenoble will take over for Mike Stallings, who led the Indians to one victory in 2007-08.

"My first plan is to meet with all the kids," Grenoble. "The bottom line is to meet with them and try to get them to come out for basketball."

It's a virtual clean slate for Grenoble, who has coached softball and football at the high school level and basketball at the junior high level. One of his first priorities is to pick a staff.

"I'm looking around for assistants," Grenoble said. "(Johnston City) wants to turn the whole program around with a clean slate from varsity on down.

"Any coach would love to walk into this situation right now where they can build a program from scratch and it's an exciting task."

Grenoble, who will retain his position with the Miners in the offseason, is also hoping to sell athletes on his fresh perspective.

"I'm a different individual," Grenoble said. "I don't believe you have to be 6-foot-5 and really fast to play basketball. They can only go up from where they were last year."

Grenoble is also running out of time this summer, with few contact days left before the Aug. 3 deadline.

"Football camps start next week and I don't want to interfere with that," Grenoble said.

" My mom told me to get on here and read and I have called him to say congradulations. I wont to let all athletes know that he is awesome. I went undefeated with him in football and won the championship. In basketball we only lost 2 games and won the championship also. In high school girls softball they won regionals for the first time in 10 years. He would still be here but took a great job there and cant blame him.He is fair and great to all on the team and I will root for you guys as long as we dont meet in the playoffs.

Quick Story

He coached one game professional basketball for the ABA Sauk Valley Roller. The coach had a family emergency and when he coached they scored 144 points thats right 144 points 6 short of the record. Our whole team saw it so its true. Good Luck coach you have 10 guys here that wish we were there. "

" I'm sorry i don’t know a whole lot about the program that coach G..took over but what I can tell you is that this whole community in North West IL. is happy for him and wish it was for us. Congrats to Johnston City as you got one of the few coaches that the kids, parents and administration all love. He took a zero win team and won 6 games and got 2nd place in the conference tournament. They will play hard defense and run the ball up the floor. Congrats Johnston City. "
