Most people when they think of energy efficiency and the need to upgrade their place think insulation and windows but Lighting system upgrades are typically the first place to look for low-cost energy efficiency measures. According to the Energy Information Administration 10% of your energy usage is lighting.
It is easier than ever to buy LED (75 percent less energy than the antique incandescent) bulbs. And yes there are many lighting upgrade incentives.
If you can buy a bulb with a higher Coloring Rendering Index (CRI) it is better. CRI represents the quality of light and its ability to render colors correctly.
When doing a cost analysis to figure what bulb for a business to put in remember to include time/labor it takes to replace a bulb.
One trick you can do to make it seem like you are getting more light is to buy a bulb with a higher K light temperature. The lower the temperature the yellower and closer to fire or candle light it is while the higher the temperature the closer to “full Spectrum” outdoor light. Typical CFLs are sold as a warm white (2700K) or cool white (3000K) but I would recommend a minimum of 5000K while 6500K would be outdoor on a cloudy day.
Typically people look at lumens but I have put in 5100K LEDs with hardly any lumens (-200) to replace a 2700K bulb with 880 lumens and due to the higher quality light it seems like more light. Let there be light! And let it be solar powered!
