A high ranking official at SIU has been given different responsibilities within the university, according to a letter sent Tuesday by Interim Chancellor Paul Sarvela.
Sarvela said in the letter Provost John Nicklow has been reassigned to administrative duties in the College of Engineering. He said Nicklow will also teach and conduct research with the university.
Nicklow was named provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs in May of 2011 by then-chancellor Rita Cheng.
Nicklow joined the university faculty as an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in 1998. He became an associate professor in 2004 and was promoted to professor in 2007. He served as acting chair of the department from July through December 2005, and was interim associate dean of the College of Engineering from 2006 to 2007. He became permanent associate dean in 2007.
SIU Chief Marketing Officer Rae Goldsmith said the university has no official statement as of Tuesday other than the letter. The details as to why Nicklow were reassigned have not been released.
Nicklow's salary as provost is $229,536. Goldsmith said she could not confirm is his salary has been changed because of the reassignment.
Sarvela said the university will move quickly to find someone to cover the provost’s duties and will appoint an interim provost at the next board meeting.
