McLeod Summer Playhouse performers on stage in the 2017 season production of 'Into the Woods.'

CARBONDALE — Class may be out for the summer, but that doesn’t mean that you have to wait until the fall to see good entertainment at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

This season’s McLeod Summer Playhouse lineup features stories of adventure, comeuppance, romance and fantasy.

Theater for Young Audience: “Jungle Book”

Based on the books by Rudyard Kipling and adapted by Greg Banks, the beloved adventure of Mowgli, the "man-cub," and his animal friends and foes promises to delight audiences young and old.

The production is sponsored by Carolyn Wagner Snyder.

Tickets are going fast. The June 6 performance is already sold out.

Location: Christian H. Moe Laboratory Theater

Performance times are:

  • 10 a.m. on June 6, 20, 27 and July 11.
  • 2 p.m. on June 2, 16, 23, July 7 and 14.

“9 to 5: The Musical”

Culturally appropriate in this #MeToo era, join us for the musical based on the 20th Century Fox Dolly Parton classic featuring three female co-workers who, when pushed to the boiling point, get even with their lying, sexist, egotistical male boss. Based on a Patricia Resnick book, it includes music and lyrics by Dolly Parton.

The production is sponsored by Glenn and Jo Poshard.

Performance times are:

  • 7:30 p.m. on June 15, 16, 22 and 23.
  • 2 p.m. on June 17 and 24.

General admission tickets: $30 adults, $14 SIU students, $10 children.

”Mamma Mia!”

Get ready to the dance in the aisles to the hit songs of ABBA in this ultimate feel-good musical featuring a mother, daughter, three possible dads and an unforgettable trip down the aisle. Based on a Catherine Johnson book, the music and lyrics are by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus with some songs from Stig Anderson.

The production is sponsored by Southern Illinois Healthcare.

Performance times are:

  • 7:30 p.m. on July 6, 7, 13 and 14.
  • 2 p.m. on July 8 and 15.

General admission tickets: $30 adults, $14 SIU students, $10 children.

All High School Theater Project: “Once Upon A Mattress”

Every year McLeod Summer Playhouse and Carbondale Community Arts work together to present the All Southern High School Theatre Project. It’s a chance for the public to enjoy performances by some of the best local high school talent and allows young artists to work in a professional theater environment.

This year, the Carol Burnett favorite, “Once Upon a Mattress,” comes to life at SIU. It's a hilarious, musical re-telling of “The Princess and the Pea.” With book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer, the production features music by Mary Rodgers and lyrics by Marshall Barer

Performance times are:

  • 7:30 p.m. nightly July 26-28
  • 2 p.m. on July 29.

General admission tickets are: $20 adults, $10 SIU students, $8 children.
