The January art exhibit at The Varsity Center is titled “Expressions,” and features the work of Carbondale resident Claudia Broom and her granddaughter, Mallory Broom of St. Louis.

Claudia seriously began watercolor painting in retirement five years ago. She has studied many artists through workshops and independent study. Currently, she is exploring mixed media, alcohol inks and collage. This is her second art show with Mallory, a seventh-grader who has found creative expression in her art and through writing.

The exhibit opens with a reception for the artists from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12. Admission is free. Snacks will be provided, and The Varsity Bar will be open and offering for sale local and other beers and wine, select cocktails, coffee and cream liqueurs.

The show will be up through Friday, Feb. 2. Regular viewing hours are 2 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Varsity Center is at 418 S. Illinois Ave., Carbondale. For more information, go to www.facebook.com/varsitycenter.
