May 6 is Free Comic Book Day, and a couple of local shops are celebrating with — what else — free comic books.
Fox Comics and Games in Marion will give away one free comic book to everyone who comes in the store on Saturday, and will also have sketch artists providing free sketches, a "cosplay" costume contest for kids and adults, and snacks.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Fox Comics & Games, at 108 E. Paradise Alley in Marion. More information is available at 618-364-0800 or facebook.com/FoxComicsAndGames.
Castle Perilous in Carbondale will offer two comic books free to each customer, and customers can get an extra free comic book with each purchase of two books off the shelf or back issue bin, three extra comic books for each graphic novel purchase, and two extra comic books for each stamp earned on a Castle Perilous frequent buyer card. Customers are also encouraged to bring five cans of food to donate to Good Samaritan House in Carbondale for an extra free comic book. Free comic books will also be given for check-ins on Castle Perilous' Facebook page or if shoppers come in costume. The store will also be giving away a limited number of Wonder Woman prints for the special day.
Author Brian K. Morris, Matt Miller of Capybara Ink, award-winning cosplayers Niresse and Amazon, and the Southern Illinois Roller Girls will attend, and sweets and coffee will be provided.
There will be face painting for kids from noon to 2 p.m., demo games of HeroClix superhero miniatures from 2 to 3 p.m., and a costume contest at 3 p.m. Castle Perilous is located at 207 W. Main St. in Carbondale.
