A program on Saturday, May 12, in the Schweinfurth Museum at the Jefferson County Historical Village will explore the ghost towns that dot the Southern Illinois landscape.
The lecture is by Sid Milliner, a former history teacher. It starts at 2 p.m.
Illinois was known as the West at one time. In Southern Illinois, there were early railroad and mining towns. Some of these towns are completely covered over with brush and are not remembered except in the record books. There were once more than 800 communities in Southern Illinois that have faded into ghost towns.
The program is free, and donations are appreciated.
The Jefferson County Historical Village is located at 1411 N. 27th St. in Mount Vernon. For more information call 618-246-0033.
