Thompson Square will soon roll out it's soul-bearing “This Is Us Tour,” an intimate production that will showcase the awarding winning husband-wife duo on stage with just two stools and an acoustic guitar, telling stories from their rags-to-riches career.
The tour kicks off Nov. 2 in Massachusetts.
Before the stripped-down version of the stage show hits the road, local fans will have a chance to see Keifer and Shawna Thompson perform with their full band at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday in The Isle Casino in Cape Girardeau.
General admission is $35. Call 800-843-4753 for additional ticket information. Doors open at 5 p.m. for the 6 p.m. show and 7:30 p.m.for the 8 p.m. performance.
They soared to the top of the Billboard charts in 2011 with te act-breaking single “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not.” The tune led to several major awards, including Duo of the Year accolades from the Academy of Country Music in 2012.
One year before the song was released, they were working as bartenders at “The Wheel,” a popular honky tonk on Lower Broadway in Nashville. The club caught a break several years later, when it was purchased by superstar Alan Jackson and refurbished as AJ's Good Time Bar.
Plus, Thompson Square's success is linked to Southern Illinois.
Thompson Square capitalized on an even bigger opportunity when they discovered and recorded “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not,” a blockbuster hit written by Herrin native David Lee Murphy.
The duo's debut single for Stoney Creek Records, “Let's Fight,” bombed. It stalled at No. 58 on the Billboard charts, but follow-up “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not” methodically worked its way to No. 1 and stayed on the charts for 40 weeks.
Thompson Square's other hits include: “I Got You,” “Glass,” “If I Didn't Have You” and “Everything I Shouldn't Be Thinking About.”
The couple had been married 16 years when they had their first child last year. Keifer joked in People magazine that “we are going to have to design a whole new bus.” The statement becomes reality when 22-month-old Rigney Cooper Thompson tags along on the This Is Us Tour.
Concert attendees can stay on the property and see The Eli Tellor Band perform in the Lone Wolf Bar, starting at 8 p.m. and playing past midnight.
