1 cup milk

1/4 cup sugar

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1 package dry yeast

2 tablespoons lukewarm water

1 tablespoon cooking oil

1 egg

3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Powdered sugar for coating

Heat milk and add sugar, salt, and nutmeg. Cool to lukewarm. Sprinkle yeast over the two tablespoons lukewarm water. Stir until dissolved. To the lukewarm milk mixture, add oil, egg, and yeast. Mix with a wooden spoon. Gradually add flour until soft dough is formed. Cover with plastic wrap and then with a clean dish towel. Let rise in warm place until doubled. Turn dough onto well-floured surface and knead gently. Roll to a 12-inch by 18-inch rectangle. Cut into 36 small rectangles. Cover and let rise about 1/2 hour. Heat cooking fat to 375 degrees. Fry a few at a time until each is golden. Drain well on paper towels. Coat generously with powdered sugar.
