Supporters were dazzled by a total star eclipse at the Friends of McLeod Summer Playhouse’s Singing with the Stars, Friday, June 2. The annual “no talent necessary competition” proved exceptionally fun with Andrea Barclay of Global Gourmet winning with her performance of “All That Jazz.” Participating in the competition were former Carbondale school principal Linda Flowers, local realtor (and former child star) Robert Foster, Jackson County Treasurer Sharon Harris-Johnson, SIU’s Interim Chancellor of Diversity Elizabeth Lewin, Arthur Agency president Dennis Poshard and Dr. Eugenio Vargas, Carbondale neurosurgeon with the SIH Brain and Spine Institute.
Mike Kasser of Southern Illinois Health Care served again as emcee and treated audiences to a parody of “California Dreamin’.” Jan Payne of Payne Gartner and Associates (2016 winner of Singing with the Stars), Dr. Kurt Martin of Center for Medical Arts and Caleb Nehring from American Cancer Society were the judges. Jenna Mee Dosch served as musical accompanist. SIU BFA musical theater students added on-stage support to the competitors.
Appetizers were provided by Hunan with Lipe Orchards providing desert. The event was organized by FMSP Board President Carolyn Donow. Vice President Darrell Bryant led the star recruitment efforts. FMSP Board members volunteered time and helped underwrite the successful event.
