The Magic Mary, edged with Pure Magic and with a little barbecue sauce added to the mix, is our version of a Bloody Mary. A Magic Mary bar is one of our favorite ways to entertain, and adds a festive note to any party or celebration. Make up your own creative garnish skewers or let guests have fun designing their own. Most bartenders swear by Zing Zang Bloody Mary mix, and that’s what we use at 17th Street, adding a few items to amp up the flavor and make it our own. Two kinds of salt make for extra texture on the rim of the glass.

Makes enough base for 12 to 16 Bloody Marys

Rim Coating

2 tablespoons kosher salt

2 tablespoons coarse sea salt

1 teaspoon Pure Magic dry rub or your choice

Lime or lemon wedges

Base

Two 32-ounce bottles Zing Zang Bloody Mary Mix

One 32-ounce bottle Clamato juice

Per Serving

1 1/2 ounces vodka (we use Tito’s)

1/4 teaspoon celery salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/4 teaspoon Pure Magic dry rub or your choice

2 teaspoons barbecue sauce (your choice)

1 teaspoon prepared horseradish

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon dill pickle juice

1 teaspoon 17th Street Wing Sauce (optional, to make it spicier)

Garnishes

Slices of sausage, Cheese cubes, Pickled okra, Dilled green beans, Dill or sweet pickles, Pickled asparagus, Pickled onions, Pepperoncini peppers, Celery sticks, Cherry tomatoes, Beef jerky sticks, Lacquered Bacon, Lemon wedges, Lime wedges

4- to 6-inch wooden skewers

For the coating: Combine the kosher salt, sea salt, and dry rub in a small bowl, then spread it on a saucer.

For the base: Mix the Bloody Mary mix and Clamato juice in a large pitcher. Chill in the refrigerator.

For one Bloody Mary: Rub the outer rim of a tall glass with a lime wedge and twist the glass on the saucer to coat with the dry rub–salt mixture. Set aside to dry.

Add ice and the vodka to a shaker. Sprinkle the celery salt, pepper, and dry rub over the top of the ice. Add the barbecue sauce, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, dill pickle juice, and wing sauce, if desired. Add 6 to 8 ounces of the base. Shake vigorously and pour into the prepared glass. Garnish as desired. Guests can thread cheese, sausage, and pickled garnishes of their choice onto the wooden skewers and add celery sticks, tomatoes, jerky, bacon, and citrus wedges as desired.
