CARBONDALE - David H. Carlson, dean of Library Affairs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, is now a member of the BioOne board of directors. He will serve a three-year term with the organization, which provides a valuable online resource for university and college libraries supporting bioscience undergraduate or advanced studies.

BioOne is a prestigious, national non-profit organization, the result of a collaboration including scientific societies, libraries, academia and the private sector. It provides access on the World Wide Web to biological, ecological and environmental science journals. Small societies and other non-profit publishers publish the majority of the titles BioOne hosts electronically. These works previously were typically available only in print format.

"I am pleased and excited about serving on the BioOne board for several reasons," said Carlson. "First, BioOne is a library-based organization that represents a practical bridge and operational solution between libraries and the publishing community. Not merely a concept, it is an active, healthy, vibrant organization that is successfully working with publishers to find practical and cost-effective solutions to the distribution and access issues of scholarly resources and information in the sciences."

The American Institute of Biological Sciences, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, the University of Kansas, the Greater Western Library Alliance and Allen Press created the BioOne organization in 1999 and the Web site launched in 2001.
