MARION - The driver of a westbound semitrailer hauling coal fell asleep Monday morning on Illinois 13 in Marion, causing his truck to run into a ditch and overturn.

State police report that Morgan D. Mattingley, 51, of Eldorado, sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Mattingley's truck was registered with Stan Harrawood Farms in Galatia.

The accident was reported at 9:49 a.m. on Illinois 13 in front of Sherlock Holmes Mobile Homes in Marion or about three-tenths of a mile west of Moeller Road. Marion firefighters had to use extrication equipment to remove the driver from his vehicle.

Police say Mattingley fell asleep at the wheel. He was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage and driving while fatigued.
