CHESTER — An inmate serving time for murder has been found dead in his cell at a prison in southwestern Illinois.

Illinois Department of Corrections spokesman Tom Shaer says the 30-year-old man died in an apparent suicide and was found Monday afternoon with a bed sheet around his neck.

The Randolph County Coroner was on the scene.

The prisoner was not immediately being identified by name pending notification of his family.

He was serving a 40-year sentence for murder and was housed in a single-person cell.

Shaer says there was nothing in man’s behavior to indicate he was at risk of harming himself.
