CARBONDALE - Four people have been taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale after a bus crashed into a wall of the University Place Shopping Center Tuesday afternoon, Carbondale police officials said.

Carbondale firefighters and Jackson County Ambulance crews were dispatched to scene along East Main Street at 2:20 p.m.

The driver of the Saluki Express bus suffered a medical episode that caused him to lose control of the bus, Carbondale Police Chief Jodi O'Guinn said.  The bus crashed into the east wall of the University Place 8 movie theater.

The driver and three of the passengers were taken to the hospital, but the severity of their injuries is unknown.

The movie theater and the Verizon Wireless store located on the east end of the shopping center are currently closed.  Representatives with the theater say they will be calling a structural engineer to examine the damage.

Police said the bus also struck four parked, unoccupied vehicles in the parking lot adjacent to the building.
