UNION COUNTY - There is no shortage of experience between the two Democratic candidates on the Feb. 5 primary ballot for Union County Circuit Clerk.

Incumbent Lorraine Moreland of Cobden has worked in the courthouse for more than 20 years with more than 12 years as the circuit clerk.

"I have the know-how to run the office," Moreland said. "I have the experience and integrity to run the office."

Challenger Billie Henderson of Cobden worked 16 years with the state's attorney's office, which included stints as the truancy officer. She now works with the Illinois State Police Drug Task Force out of Ullin.

Henderson said she decided to run because it's time for a change in the office. She said with her experience, she would be able to coordinate with more offices.

"I think there has to be unity among elected officials, law enforcement, social service agencies and the public," Henderson said. "All of these people at some point touch the circuit clerk's office."

But Moreland, who was appointed to the position in 1995, said her audits are among the best-ranked in the state and her performance speaks for itself. She hopes the voters agree.

"I appreciate the support of the voters," Moreland said.
