The loss of one of their own inspired Illinois state troopers to support his family, then carry on his memory by supporting as many children as they can.

Illinois State Police District 22 lost Steve Pankey to cancer in 1994.

"From this loss, the members of the district worked together to bring support to the Pankey family," said the unit's commander, Capt. Harry Masse. From that effort grew CARE Bears, the acronym representing "Children Are Remembered Everywhere."

"Employees of the district and others in the area volunteer their time and talent to put on special events throughout the year," said Kenny Klein, telecommunications supervisor for the district.

"We had three big events this event to help raise money - a barbecue in Paducah, a trap shoot, and a day of diving at Mermet Springs. Everybody volunteers their time, and every dollar that is raised, goes for food and gifts to be distributed to the families."

Thirty-five families will be helped this Christmas season.

Local business including Short Enterprises of Anna and the McDonalds and Hardees restaurants in Anna, help raise money to buy clothing, gifts and food for children in Alexander, Johnson, Hardin, Massac, Pope, Pulaski and Union counties each year.

Trooper Bridget Rice, safety education officer for the district, has had the opportunity to be one of the troopers who deliver the items.

"It is a moving experience," she said. "One home in particular just had a tree with no ornaments or gifts under the tree. Two of the children, both boys, were more excited about getting the food than the wrapped gifts."

Troopers from District 22 will begin delivering items at 10 a.m. today.
