CARBONDALE - Wandering through the R. Buckminster Fuller Dome, Murphysboro residents Joe Krienert and Andrew Brown discussed history and architecture while enjoying the favorite dessert of the man who built the geodesic dome nearly 50 years ago.

The sweet treat, known as a Dymaxion sundae, consists of orange sherbet and dark chocolate. Mary O'Hara, vice president of the RBF Dome, said the sundae, which on Saturday was served in an ice cream cone to prevent waste, used to be served in Fuller's honor at a former Carbondale restaurant.

The sundae and tour of the Forest Street dome were part of the Arbor District's second annual yard sale, which took place Saturday. Signs welcoming students back lined the district, which is bound by Oakland Avenue and Popular Street and Walnut and Schwartz streets.

Brown, a student at John A. Logan Community College, said he came for the tour after an architecture camp perked his interest in the dome and Fuller.

"He is a significant public figure," Brown said. Krienert quickly added that people should respect Fuller's ideas, which he referred to as ingenious and awesome.

Just down the street from the dome on Springer Avenue, Rachel Malcolm-Woods and Blaine Ensor were finishing up their yard sale at about noon. Malcolm-Woods said the early morning drizzle didn't seem to affect the sale, adding that the couple was able to sell most of their items.

The remaining items didn't take long to get rid of, though. Ensor asked his next door neighbor, Zack Duffy, if he wanted the leftovers.

Helping him move a large dresser, Duffy, a junior studying history education from Vernon Hills, said he was happy to take the freebies. In fact, he needed a dresser. The student moved into the home this summer to join two friends who are going on their second year of living in the Arbor District.

"And there's a patio table and two more chairs coming," Duffy said, adding that he enjoys living in the area. "It's real nice."

The District's yard sale and dome tour was a success, O'Hara said. At least a couple dozen people toured the dome Saturday and about a dozen residences hosted yard sales. One of the district's goals is to promote the neighborhood, as well as welcome students to the area.
