JOPPA - One juvenile male is in a St. Louis area hospital and another behind bars after a Saturday evening shooting in Joppa.

Massac County Deputy Chief Ted Holder said the department received a call about 8:30 p.m. Saturday of a shooting at 341 Joppa North Ave. in Joppa. One juvenile had suffered a gunshot wound to the head, he said.

The victim, whose name and age were not released, was taken to Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis and later transferred to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis, Holder said.

The weapon fired was a handgun, he said.

The victim was inside the home of a relative. Holder said authorities believe that's where the shooting occurred.

The alleged shooter, another juvenile who already was serving probation, was arrested and taken to the Massac County Sheriff's Department and later transported to the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center in Benton, Holder said.

A detention hearing has been set for today at the Massac County Courthouse in Metropolis.

Holder said nobody else was injured in the shooting and only one shot was fired. The motive behind the shooting has not yet been established.

The incident is under investigation by the Massac County Sheriff's Department in cooperation with the City of Joppa and Illinois State Police.

State police officials with District 13 in Du Quoin could not be reached for comment.
