DU QUOIN - Settling into a new home in Du Quoin, the Perry County Humane Society is in need of donations to keep the no-kill shelter running.

The non-profit organization relocated to 8365 Illinois 14 about a year ago, and currently has a full house of dogs and cats available for adoption, said Mary Bullock, kennel administrator.

"Right now we are really full," Bullock said. "We have 15 dogs and 10 cats."

On Saturday, the shelter hosted a "Bathing for Bucks" fundraiser and adoption fair, offering dog owners an opportunity to give their furry friends a bath, grooming and nail trimming for a donation.

The shelter also offered homemade dog treats for sale to raise funds.

Turnout for the event was "tremendous," with a steady stream of dog lovers donating to the shelter and getting a much-needed wash for their pets, Bullock said.

The shelter recently gained nonprofit status and has applied for grants, but currently relies on donations and adoption fees to stay afloat.

"It's a struggle right now," she said.

The shelter is mostly run by volunteers, and Bullock said she's looking for more people who want to pitch in to help give animals a loving home.
