MAKANDA - A 47-year-old Carterville woman suffered nonlife-threatening injuries Thursday when the motorcycle she was riding left a road in Giant City State Park.

Jacqueline Samuel was traveling from Herrin to Bald Knob Cross with fellow members of the local Christian Motorcycle Association about 2:15 p.m. The group was enjoying a New Year's ride to the Alto Pass landmark, said Roger Gibson of Dowell, who was with the group.

About 30 members continued ahead while a small contingent stopped in Makanda to warm up, Gibson said. Samuel had been cold, which may have caused her to lose control, he said.

Deputy Kenny Lindsay of the Jackson County Sheriff's Department said Samuel was headed west on Makanda Road, which runs through Giant City park, when her vehicle went off the left side of the road and skidded.

At the scene, Lindsay said Samuel injuries seemed relatively minor and centered on the shoulders. Samuel was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, where she was listed in stable condition.
