ASHLEY - Ashley United Methodist Church will host a Pack 2 School event from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 23, at the church, 365 E. Madison St. The event is free.

Free backpacks with school supplies will be given to children in Ashley and the surrounding communities. Parents must accompany their children to pick up a backpack.

The church received a donation of backpacks, sponsored by WIBI Christian Radio and Rural Compassion, filled with school supplies for grade school-aged children. The church will accommodate older aged children on an as-needed basis.

Hamburgers and hotdogs will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 to 6 p.m. The firemen of Ashley will be honored at 2 p.m. at the Firemen Appreciation ceremony, and a Law Enforcement Appreciation ceremony, acknowledging the Washington County Police who serve Ashley, will be at 3 p.m.

Other events are scheduled throughout the day, including three giant inflatable slides and bounce houses, games, train rides, face painting, a fire truck on display, a dunk tank, snow cone, popcorn, cotton candy machines, gift basket giveaways, bicycle giveaway, cake walk, barbecue, local music and a gospel group performance.
