Franklin County authorities have arrested a Benton man wanted for attempted first-degree murder.
Alan W. Bennett, 47, allegedly shot a 40-year-old female relative in her Benton home on May 28 and has evaded authorities ever since.
At 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, deputies with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a break-in at a rural Benton home, according to a news release from Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered signs of forced entry and came upon a woman, Eva Y. McPherson, 54, of West Frankfort, who said she was alone in the house and that she had the homeowner’s permission to be inside.
Bennett was found hiding in a bedroom. He is wanted on a Franklin County warrant for attempted first-degree murder, home invasion, aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful use of weapons by a convicted felon.
Because he had a handgun in his possession, Bennett will also be charged with a second count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
McPherson is being charged with obstructing justice.
Reached by phone on Wednesday, Jones said the woman Bennett shot was his sister.
