Carbondale Tourism will be hosting the first open meeting Tuesday in preparation for the 2017 solar eclipse.

The meeting is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at Carbondale Chamber of Commerce on South Illinois Avenue.

In collaboration with City Council members and the Chamber of Commerce, Cinnamon Wheeles-Smith, executive director for Carbondale Tourism, said the meeting is an opportunity for members from the organization to meet with businesses and answer questions about the solar eclipse.

"I've seen a variety of them at different presentations and the AAS Conference held at SIU, but that has not really been an opportunity for them to ask questions of 'what is the city of Carbondale planning?'" she said. "So that's what this meeting kicks off."

On June 14, members of the City Council authorized an agreement with Diane Regan, operator of RayGun LLC of Carbondale — who was present at the meeting  — to assist with plans for the total solar eclipse in 2017.

The next Open Meeting ,in preparation for the event, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 16. Future dates of Sept. 13 and Oct. 18 are pending.
