CARBONDALE — The City of Carbondale Police Department has identified the victim in Saturday night’s fatal shooting.

Tony Johnson, 35, was found with a fatal gunshot wound after police responded to the shooting at about 2:41 a.m. Saturday in the 700 block of East College Street, Lieutenant Mark Goddard told The Southern on Monday.

Johnson had an East St. Louis address but had lived in Carbondale off and on, Goddard said.

Goddard said police are still highly involved in the investigation and that further details are not being released at this time.

The suspect is described as a bearded, heavy-set black male who was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and a hat, according to an earlier news release from the department.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Carbondale Police Department at 618-457-3200 or Crime Stoppers at 618-549-2677.
