The old Fred’s Dance Barn building burned to the ground Monday night, and with it years of local history.

A spokesperson for the Carterville Fire Department said the blaze began sometime about 11 p.m. and quickly consumed the structure.

While there were hydrants nearby, the volume of water needed to contain the fire was such that tanker trucks were brought in help fight the blaze.

The Carterville Fire Department was backed up by units from Cambria, Herrin, Hurst and the Williamson County Fire Protection District.

Popular for its boisterous, countrified atmosphere, Fred’s closed in December, 2006, after nearly 40 years of operation and was sold to the Carterville Unit No. 5 School District, which used the building for storage.

Comments on social media indicate that years of memorabilia associated with the school were lost in the fire including trophies, antiques and sets for various productions.

No injuries have been reported. The State Fire Marshal is investigating the incident.
