A juvenile has been charged in connection with a sexual assault incident at Carterville High School.

The 17-year-old male has been charged with one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault with bodily harm, a class X felony, and one count of criminal sexual assault with force, a class 1 felony.

Deputy Chief Mike Flaningam of the Carterville Police Department confirmed that incident occurred at about 12:35 p.m. Aug. 24 at Carterville High School.

Flaningam said that because juveniles are involved in the case, limited details are being released. He said that the investigation is ongoing and that he does not anticipate that further suspects will be charged.

The defendant made his first appearance in court Aug. 25. His $10,000 bond was posted Aug. 28.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Sept. 11.

In a statement, Caterville Schools Superintendent Keith Liddell said, “An incident occurred on the campus of Carterville High School on Thursday, August 24th. Law enforcement was immediately contacted and the student involved was removed from the premises. As Superintendent of Schools, I want to assure every student and parent that this was an isolated incident and that there is no on-going threat to the safety and well-being of students at the High School.”

He added that no further information or comment could be provided because the matter involves students of the district.
