Carbondale police are investigating a home invasion that happened early Wednesday morning, during which a gun was fired while residents fought with the intruder.

According to a news release from Carbondale Police Department Lt. Paul Edwards, police responded to a residence in the 1900 block of North Illinois Avenue at about 3:40 a.m. Wednesday in response to a report of a home invasion.

Officers learned that a suspect wearing a ski mask had forced his way into the residence while brandishing a firearm. He made threats against the residents and then fought with a resident, at which time the suspect's gun went off. Police said the suspect then fled on foot.

No one was shot during the incident. The resident who fought with the intruder reported minor injuries.

Police said the suspect is a white male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a slim build.

Police said the investigation is continuing, and they do not believe anyone involved was affiliated with Southern Illinois University.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Carbondale Police Department at 618-457-3200.
