A Carterville man was arrested Sunday morning after he was found armed with an AR-15 rifle, wearing a green Army helmet and a ballistic vest.

According to a news release from Carterville Police Department, officers responded to an apartment complex at 703 Laclede Ave. after a neighbor called at 7:07 a.m. about the armed man.

The subject was identified as Gregory Martin, 23, and he was taken into custody without incident.

Carterville Police Chief Heather Reno said the incident wasn't related to an altercation and the weapon was not fired. She said Martin lives in the apartment complex and a neighbor called 911.

Reno said Martin came outside when officers arrived, armed and wearing body armor. She said he did not make scene and did not say anything before he was ordered to the ground and arrested.

He was charged with aggravated unlawful use of weapons, unlawful use of body armor, aggravated assault and disorderly conduct. He was transported to Williamson County Jail.
