A 30-year-old Herrin man was sentenced on Tuesday to serve four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after he pleaded guilty to a Class 3 felony charge of theft from a person.

According to a news release from Jackson County state's attorney Michael C. Carr, Devale J. Fredericks pleaded guilty to the charge in October. On April 19, a 73-year-old woman reported that a suspect grabbed a change purse from her hands and ran away with it while she was sitting inside a Murphysboro business. Surveillance video from the business showed Fredericks grab the victim's change purse out of her hands and run out of the business.

Following his sentence, Fredericks must serve one year of mandatory supervised release.

The Murphysboro Police Department handled the investigation.
