HERRIN - A 21-year-old man died after being shot in his Herrin apartment early Thursday morning,

Killed was Jamel Davis, said Williamson County Coroner Mike "Junior" Burke. Davis was shot in his apartment at 609 N. Ninth St. sometime before Herrin police responded to a 911 call about 3:15 a.m. Thursday. Burke pronounced Davis dead at Herrin Hos-pital later in the day.

The suspect or suspects involved in the shooting fled the scene before authorities arrived. Police said they believe the incident was not a random act.

"We are treating this as a homicide," Burke said. "I have a criminal forensic pathologist doing an autopsy on him."

Results of the autopsy could be submitted to the Williamson County state's attorney as early as today.

Herrin police, Williamson County Sheriff's Major Case Squad and Illinois State Police were at the apartment Thursday morning.

No suspects had been identified as of late Thursday, police said.

Exactly what happened was unclear.

Neighbor Aaron Lindsay, who lives across the street, said he heard "a loud gunshot." Carolyn Castonan, who lives in one of the apartment units below where the shooting happened, said she heard a lot of noise from upstairs during the night, but not gunshots.

Davis and a roommate had lived at the apartment on North Ninth Street since March, landlord Carol Jenkins said. The apartment is one of four in the building.
