MURPHYSBORO - Murphysboro police are investigating an accidental death from early Monday morning, after they say a man was electrocuted while trying to steal copper wire.

Police received a report at about 1:26 a.m. Monday of someone having been electrocuted in the former Curwood building, an abandoned manufacturing building on North 19th Street. According to police, the investigation showed three men from Murphysboro had illegally entered the building to take copper wire.

While removing the wire, police say, a 26-year-old man touched an active high-voltage supply line, was electrocuted and died on scene. A 22-year-old man received nonlife-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, and the third man, 20, was not injured.

Police are not yet releasing any of the men’s names, and no charges have been filed yet.
