GALLATIN COUNTY - Thomas E. Neumann, 46, of Cave In Rock was pronounced dead at Harrisburg Medical Center about half an hour after a tractor-trailer he was driving westbound on Illinois 13 in Gallatin County crashed.

His death will be investigated by the Saline County Coroner’s Office, Illinois State Police District 19 in Carmi said.

The truck veered across the center line into the eastbound lane, then went off the roadway just west of Pool Road and traveled a few hundred feet before striking a ditch about 30 feet south of the roadway. The rig then continued several hundred feet westbound next to the roadway before coming to a stop. The truck had only minor damage from the accident.

Passing motorists checked on Neumann after the crash and found him suffering from medical trauma not related to the crash, state police said. He was treated at the scene by Gallatin County Ambulance Service staff, who administered CPR. He was taken to Harrisburg Medical Center for further treatment and died there.

Other agencies assisting at the crash scene were the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office and the Equality Police Department.
