WEST FRANKFORT - Coming on the heels of a successful introductory summer community education series that drew 40 students, Morthland College, a four-year liberal arts school, begins curriculum classes today for the first time.

"It took six months to build this curriculum. Students will be reading works of antiquity in their original language to develop the skills of reflection and interpretation," said college founder and president Tim Morthland on Monday as he and administrators attended to last-minute details.

There are 11 enrolled students who are either taking classes full-time or part-time. Approved earlier this year by Illinois Board of Higher Education to grant four-year degrees, Morthland College is at 210 E. Main in downtown West Frankfort.

There are three classrooms including a computer room with nine work stations and an instructor's station. There are also prepa-rations to use West Frankfort Aquatic Center in city park and to obtain space in West Frankfort Public Library for instructional use, said administrative secretary Jenny Ditch.

Two degrees are currently being offered - Bachelor of Arts in Classics and Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies. Morthland said he sees college recognition evolving from its offering classical languages - Greek and Latin. There will also be future semesters offer-ing Hebrew.

"Students have exposure to Latin and Greek that have the basics to understanding all languages," Morthland said. "The college in time will have recognition for its languages. It's a goal that is emerging."
