CARBONDALE - Bruce Weber has been fired as the Illini basketball coach after a 17-15 season, ESPN.com reported Friday morning.

Weber, former basketball coach for the Salukis, was fired a day after Illinois lost to Iowa in round one of the Big Ten. The Illini haven't advanced past the second round since the coach's second year.

ESPN also reports SIU Carbondale Athletic Director Mario Moccia "has been monitoring Weber's status, according to sources."

In previous interviews with The Southern Illinoisan, Moccia was non-committal on speculating with Weber's chances of returning to SIU.

“I root for Coach. I would hate to speculate on that because I hope he wins big and finishes out his contract,” Moccia said prior to the end of the Illini's tournament run.

Moccia fired head basketball coach Chris Lowery last week immediately following SIU's loss to Indiana State in the MVC tournament in St. Louis.
