FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Longtime Franklin County Sheriff Bill Wilson, 64, of West Frankfort, died at 9:58 a.m. Sunday in Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon.

Wilson, who retired at the end of his term in 2010, had served nearly 30 years in the Franklin County Sheriff's Department and had been sheriff since 1990. He was a graduate of Benton High School.

Wilson had served a term as president of the Illinois Sheriffs' Association. An ISA executive board member since 1997, Wilson was sworn in as the group's president in 2008.

He also was instrumental in building a juvenile detention center in Franklin County, which serves 26 Southern Illinois counties.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort.
