Internet service went down for many Frontier Communications customers across Southern Illinois Friday morning, an outage company officials tracked to a faulty piece of equipment in the South.

Frontier spokeswoman Patricia Amendola said customers began reporting the outage at about 7 a.m. Service was completely restored before noon, she added.

Technicians were investigating what caused the outages. Amendola said it was likely a faulty piece of equipment based in Alabama. The error apparently caused outages in that state as well.
