CARBONDALE - Harrisburg's Tyler Smithpeters is staying close to home.

Smithpeters, The Southern Illinoisan's boys basketball co-player of the year with teammate Capel Henshaw, verbally committed to SIU earlier today for the 2013-14 season. The 6-foot-4, 178-pound guard played both the point and shooting guard positions for the Class 2A state champion Bulldogs, averaging a team-best 17.5 points per game.

Smithpeters, the younger brother of former Saluki Kyle Smithpeters, who is currently the men's basketball coach at John A. Logan College, also averaged 4.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.

"I think Tyler can do a lot of different things, and that's what they really liked about him," said longtime Harrisburg coach Randy Smithpeters, who happens to be Tyler's father. "He can score. He can handle the ball. He can shoot it. He just really has a lot of upside."

Smithpeters made 56-of-140 3-pointers heading into the state tournament (40 percent). Playing with a partially broken foot, he scored 23 points in the championship game against Seton Academy.

Harrisburg finished 33-1.

Smithpeters is expected to sign an official letter of intent next week, Randy Smithpeters said. SIU, naturally, could drive the paperwork over to him if it wasn't an NCAA violation, Smithpeters' father said, so he will have to wait until it arrives in the mail.

Smithpeters will become SIU coach Barry Hinson's sixth recruit for 2013-14, joining forward Sean O'Brien, forward Jordan Martin, point guard K.C. Goodwin and shooting guards Hunter Gibson and Mike Balogun.

What a great choice! Smithpeters has a high BB IQ, is from a BB family, Showed his leadership in a State Championship and is six four. He will bring in fans from the area to fill the Arena. He needs 22 more lbs, but all freshmen need to bulk up. Glad to see a local kid get a chance rather than go off some place and become a star for some one else. Now prove me right over the next couple of years Smithpeaters.

This is good news. As a life long Saluki BB fan I like this move. Finally, some attention might be paid again by the region to positives news coming out of SIU and it's basketball program. Pay no attention to dean_SIU's comments...his bile is spewed on SalukiTalk and it's replacement.

That sounded like an insult to Smithpeter's playing ability. I'm looking forward to see him in the maroon uniform. Too many stupid trolls on here.

In his other life dean_siu serves as a columnist for The Onion.

That may be the funniest thing I've ever read on here.

@dean_siu: You're joking, right? This is a joke. Lowery? Right...

I see that Barry Hinson's recruiting has gone so bad he's finally reaching out to kids he wouldn't touch 2 months ago. It's a tragedy what Mario has done to this program. It's time to end the experiment, give Barry a buyout, and bring back Lowery to restore this program to greatness.
