Members from several Herrin-area churches sort donated items and load them onto pallets in preparation to send the supplies to Texas to aid in relief efforts from Hurricane Harvey on Friday at the Southern Illinois Worship Center in Herrin.

The Southern Illinoisan is compiling hurricane relief efforts that local businesses and nonprofits are putting together.

Hands of Hope Foundation: New expanded Irma-Harvey Relief Aid drive extended to run through Monday, Sept. 25. Items will be packed up and taken to support the work of relief centers based in Florida, Texas and Louisiana that is working to help support victims and leading clean-up operations in these affected areas. Items in need include (please, no clothes) bleach, household cleaning chemicals, liquid dish soap, heavy-duty garbage bags, laundry detergent, cleaning masks and gloves, mops and brooms, cases of water or Gatorade, baby formula and food, baby diapers, pull-ups and wipes, hygiene products, insect repellent, non-perishable canned food items, peanut butter and jelly (no glass jars please), dog and cat food. Drop locations include Christian Life Church in Herrin, Lifesource Church in West Frankfort, Community of Faith Church in Marion, Hopewell MB Church in Carbondale, First Christian Church in Anna, Sam's Clun in Marion. WTCT Helping Hand Outreach Donation Collection Site: WTCT Helping Hand Outreach in Marion is a collection site of donations for Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma victims. We are actively accepting any donations. WTCT Helping Hand Outreach traveled to the Beaumont Texas location with one truck full already and our goal is to fill up another truck to head to where it is most needed. Our Savior Lutheran Hurricane Relief Benefit Luncheon: 11 a.m. Sept. 24, 700 S. University Ave. in Carbondale. We are accepting donations to benefit the hurricane relief efforts in the Houston area. All cash and gift cards raised will be sent to a local pastor who lives and serves in Houston, so that 100% of the donations will be used for relief, clean-up, and rebuilding. Dog Carnival at Turley Park for Pets in Distress: Noon-4 p.m. Sept. 30 at Turley Park, 1315 S. Wall St. Dog Carnival and Super Hero Pet Parade in Turley Park to raise funds for local organizations rescuing dogs in distress from recent hurricanes. More than 25 dog carnival activity stations to explore. Superhero pet cape customized on site.
