CARBONDALE - Two former SIU football players signed free agent deals with NFL teams this week.
Running back/kick returner Deji Karim signed with the Houston Texans on Tuesday, according to a tweet from his agent, Jason Bernstein, and ProFootballTalk.com, a part of NBC Sports. Former Saluki cornerback Korey Lindsey signed with the New Orleans Saints on Monday, according to multiple sources.
Karim tried out for Houston last weekend at its rookie minicamp, according to ProFootballTalk.com, and is currently the third non-rookie running back on the Texans' roster. Arian Foster and Ben Tate are the other two running backs.
Karim played for Jacksonville from 2010-11 and Indianapolis toward the end of last season. He scored his first career NFL touchdown on a 101-yard kickoff return against the Texans when he was with the Colts. It was the longest kick return in Colts history.
Karim has rushed for 290 yards on 98 carries and caught 17 passes for 130 yards in 26 games. Last year he returned nine kicks for 328 yards. Karim has 86 career kick returns for 2,228 yards.
Lindsey was drafted by Cincinnati in 2011 but is still yet to record his first official NFL tackle. He finished last season on the Washington Redskins' practice squad and has been on the active roster for part of the last two seasons with Indianapolis and Arizona.
