WEST FRANKFORT — A West Frankfort police officer was injured during a scuffle with a suspect Thursday.
The officer suffered a broken hand in an altercation with Virgil O. Hammersley, 50, West Frankfort Police Chief Jeff Tharp said.
Police received a 7:27 p.m. call reporting that a man, later identified as Hammersley, was beating up a woman in the parking lot of Boomerangs tavern. The caller told police the man was leaving in a vehicle and gave a description and direction of travel.
A responding officer spotted the vehicle and was able to initiate a traffic stop in the 1000 block of East Main Street.
As soon as the vehicle pulled to the right side of the road the driver exited the truck and fled on foot. The officer gave chase and tackled Hammersley, who then began choking the officer, Tharp said.
A second officer arrived on scene and deployed a Taser on the suspect. Hammersley was taken into custody.
Hammersley was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, resisting a police officer and driving while license revoked.
He was taken to Franklin County Jail.
