A Jefferson County man is dead and another jailed after an altercation outside a rural Mount Vernon club Tuesday.

Jefferson County deputies and emergency personnel responded to a report of a fight and possible stabbing outside Mount Vernon Gun and Sportsman’s Club at 7:50 p.m., Sheriff Roger Mulch said in a news release.

Deputies found an injured man, later identified as Eric Houser, 37, outside the club.

Houser was taken to Crossroads Hospital in Mount Vernon, where he was pronounced dead just before 9 p.m., coroner Eddie Joe Marks said.

Initial investigation indicates an altercation between Houser and Sammy H. Kehrer, 47, occurred outside the club.

Both men lived in the Mount Vernon area.

Kehrer was located and taken into custody without incident in Jefferson County late Tuesday, Mulch said.

He is being held in Jefferson County Justice Center on a charge of aggravated battery. Bond has not yet been set.

Houser’s death is under investigation by the Jefferson County state’s attorney, coroner and sheriff’s office, and state police.
