ALTON — The body of a missing southern Illinois man has been found on a ledge about 150 feet down in a quarry.

Madison County Sheriff's Capt. Mike Dixon says it appears that 36-year-old Charles Roe of Godfrey died of a "tragic accident."

Dixon says relatives have reported that Roe was fascinated with the quarry and liked watching the operations there.

Roe had been missing since Wednesday, when he told his family he was going to an evening Mass. It's unclear whether he ever arrived there.

His truck was found at a hospital parking lot near the quarry, leading to a search of the area.

A television news helicopter covering his disappearance spotted his body Friday morning at the Alby Quarry in Alton.

No foul play is suspected in his death.
