ENERGY — Boyd Lee “Bud” Hampton, 75, passed away peacefully Nov. 7, 2017, in Herrin Hospital.
A rite of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 10, in Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 316 W. Monroe, Herrin, with Father Ken Schaefer officiating. Burial will follow at Egyptian Memorial Gardens, Energy. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home, 2704 S. Park Ave., Herrin.
Bud was born in Cumberland, Kentucky, to Boyd and Gertrude (Hoskins) Hampton.
He married Judy Beltz Whitson on Oct. 22, 1988.
After retiring as a coalminer with Old Ben Coal Company - Mine 21 in 1993, he was an Inspector with the Williamson County Housing Authority until 2005.
He was a member of United Mine Workers of America, Local No. 1124. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, where he served as a Eucharistic minister. He was a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 2164, in Herrin, Illinois, and a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, Assembly No. 195, in DuQuoin, Illinois.
His passion was woodworking, and he made beautiful mission rockers and rocking horses for his all his children and grandchildren. He donated wooden rockers and crosses for charitable organizations and the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.
Bud is preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Gertrude Hampton; and his brothers, Kenneth Frank Hampton and George Eugene Hampton.
Bud is survived by his wife, Judy Beltz Whitson Hampton; his sister, Cora Sue Lavaty (Bob); sons David Charles Hampton (Anita), Ernest Lee Hampton (Jan), Boyd Lee Hampton Jr. (Charlotte), and Bryan Lee Hampton (Suzy), and stepchildren, Scott Whitson (Lori) and Gena Whitson-Owen (Brian). He was the loving grandfather of Ashley Hampton, Catherine Hampton, Kalep Hampton, Mathew Hampton, Rachel Hampton, Cody Hampton, Sierra Hampton, Brianna Hampton, Scott Earl Whitson (Joscelyn), Brailyn Whitson Medearis (Michael), Jake Harris Owen, Abigail Jane Owen, Heather Crowder (Dave), and Chris Schaffer. He was the adored great-grandfather of Kenadi Crowder, Gracen Crowder, Braxton Medearis, Ruger Wade, Olivia Conaway and Griffin Medearis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Our Lady of Mount Carmel New School Fund. Bud’s family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the ICU staff at Herrin Hospital and the SIH Medical Group.
