AVA — Donald S. 'Froggy' Young of Ava, passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, in Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.
Born on Dec. 7, 1949 in Martinsville, Indiana, to Marvin P. and Joann (Cripps) Young, Frog was preceded in death by his parents and infant son, Jacob Karl Kamalei Young.
He is survived by siblings, Shelley (Ron) Wolf of Millbrook, Alabama, and Benjamin Kelly of Tampa, Florida. He also leaves behind his beloved wife of 42 years, Marla (Fritsche) Young; his daughter, Amanda Young Brott, and son, Dennis (Jennifer) Young. He delighted in the visits of his spirited and cherished grandchildren, Samuel and Matilda.
Froggy was a Vietnam War Veteran - serving as a door gunner in Binh Long. He served the remainder of his nine-year Army service as a fixed wing crew chief.
In 1978, he began his career with the Illinois Department of Corrections as a correctional officer. Working his way through every rank, Frog retired as Warden of Shawnee Correctional Center in 2002. He subsequently served on the Illinois Corrections Advisory Board after retirement.
Froggy was an active member of the Jacob Deer Rut during its formative years and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Jacob. An extraordinary vocalist, he loved singing with the River Bottom Bluegrass Band or could be found crooning Irish tunes at the end of many long evenings. He loved to serenade his bride. He treasured his many friends, colleagues and family members and was loved by far too many to name.
A memorial gathering will be held at the Campbell Hill Community Center at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 20, for family and friends.
