CARBONDALE — Dr. Doris Angela Weaver, Ph.D., 71, passed away Oct. 8, 2017.
Doris was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to Mary and Jesse Weaver. She was the oldest of three children.
Her siblings are twin sister, Dr. Dora (Micki) Weaver, and younger brother, Jesse (Buster) Weaver. Doris’ parents precede her in death. Doris is also survived by her only daughter, Dara Jumoke Weaver-Holmes; Nephew-son, Tony A. Weaver; niece, Tish Herrington; a host of cousins; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority sisters, church family members, craft organization members and community friends.
Doris graduated from Charles Sumner High School in St. Louis, earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Psychology from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and her doctorate in clinical psychology from SIU Carbondale.
Doris was employed as a psychology instructor by the SIU psychology department and was eventually appointed as an adjunct professor by the SIU Medical School. Doris also worked as a psychologist for the Illinois Department of Criminal Justice and a hospital administrator for the Illinois Department of Mental Health. She served as assistant director for the Mental Health Hospital in Springfield, Illinois, and as hospital administrator at the Chester Mental Health Center in Chester, Illinois. She was also a former Jackson County Board member.
Doris was an active member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., her church and numerous craft organizations such as Heartland Lace Skills of Paducah, Kentucky, and Wednesday Night Crafter, she was also very active with the Girl Scouts. She started Girl Scout Troop 192 at Saint Andrew Catholic School, organized the annual Holiday Sign for Jackson County Girl Scouts and hosted the annual Thinking Day International Festival held at the Catholic Newman Center in Carbondale for the Jackson County Girl Scouts.
Services for Doris will be held Saturday, Oct. 14, at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 303 S. Poplar St., Carbondale, with Father Robert (Bob) Flannery officiating. Sorority services will begin at 9:30 a.m. with funeral mass to follow at 10 am.
