CARBONDALE — James L. Gibbs, 83, of Carlinville, formerly of Carbondale, passed away Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, in Carlinville Nursing and Rehab Center.
He was born Aug. 11, 1934, in West Frankfort, the son of W.R. and Marian Nell (Ashwell) Gibbs.
He married Evelyn L. Varner on May 8, 1954. She preceded him in death May 9, 2001.
James proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He was employed by SIU as a printer for over 20 years. He had a passion for the outdoors, liked to bowl and play golf, and loved to travel. James was a very spiritual man.
He is survived by his daughter, Terry (Richard) Crowell of Carlinville; grandsons, Jason (Celeste) Crowell of Carlinville, Eric Crowell of Riverview, Florida; great-grandchildren, Wyatt Gilbert and Charlotte Crowell, both of Carlinville; sister, Catherine Neely of Carson City, Nevada; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold Gibbs, Kenneth Gibbs, Walter Gibbs and Lester Gibbs; sister, Helen Simpson; and twin sister, Joan Cook.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017, in Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Hicks officiating. Interment will follow in Murdale Gardens of Memory with military honors accorded. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of services.
Memorial contributions can be made to Abundant Life Fellowship of Murphysboro and will be accepted at the funeral home.
