JOHNSTON CITY — John Wayne Shadowens Sr., 86, of Johnston City, passed away at 1:48 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, in Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin.
Wayne was born Sept. 25, 1931, in Williamson County, to Elmer and Madge (Deaton) Shadowens. He married Alice Irene Grant on Oct. 19, 1961, in Herrin.
Wayne was retired, having been employed by GTE as an equipment installation supervisor for 21 years.
He also served his country honorably as staff sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corp.
Wayne was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Johnston City.
He enjoyed playing golf with his buddies and had the distinction of having two holes in one. He was a proud supporter of his son, John and his Sesser-Valier Red Devils. Wayne also enjoyed attending SIU-C Basketball games before his health began to decline.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Irene Shadowens of Johnston City; four children, Sherry (Krzysztof) Padyasek of North Aurora, John (Bobbi) Shadowens Jr. of Sesser, Kathy (Malcom) Jones of Marion, and Robert (Denise) Shadowens of Florida; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents; son, David Shadowens; and a brother, Gib Shadowens.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, in Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City, with the Revs. Stephen Hudspath and Ted A. Hartley officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City is entrusted with the arrangements.
