ANNA — Marvin E. Caraker, 91, of Anna, formerly of Cobden, died Thursday, May 10, 2018, in the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Anna.
He was born Feb. 1, 1927, in Anna, the son of Phillip M. and Lona (Russell) Caraker.
He married Mary Sue Moreland on Oct. 3, 1961, in East St. Louis. She preceded him in death Sept. 14, 2011.
Marvin is survived by his children, Lee (Norma) Caraker of Du Quoin, Mitzi (Jim) Stricklin of Pinckneyville, Robert Caraker of Springfield, Missouri, Lois (B.J.) Kent of Florida; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Gayle Caraker of Anna; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Sue Caraker; son, Jason Caraker; daughter, Candi Hayward; granddaughter, Brandie Caraker; brother, Richard Caraker; and one sister, Lois Blessing.
Marvin was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 50 years as a conductor before his retirement.
He held many memberships over the years and enjoyed being involved in various activities. He was a life member of the Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 of the VFW in Anna, the Anna Moose Lodge, American Legion, the U.S. Transportation Organization; and the Lake of Egypt Association.
Services for Marvin E. Caraker will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 18, in the Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Cobden, with Doug Bridgeman officiating. Interment will be in the Cobden Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 of the VFW in Anna and the Illinois Army National Guard Funeral Honor Team of Marion. Visitation will from 11 a.m. and until the service hour at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Anna. Envelopes will be available in the Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home.
