COBDEN — Mary Jane Steck Martens, 73, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017, in Evanston Hospital in Evanston, from complications related to leukemia.
She is survived by her daughter, Merit (Ernest) Sullivan and granddaughter, Siena Sullivan of Chicago. She is also survived by her siblings, Susan and Gail Steck of Cobden, Carla Greene of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Robert Steck of Greenville, South Carolina; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Robert Carl Steck, in 1982 and her mother, Dr. Mary Goddard Steck, in 1986.
Jane was born Jan. 13, 1944, in Chicago. She graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1967. She lived all over the world throughout the course of her life. Before her illness, she taught in China for over a decade. She spent the last two and a half years of her life in Chicago.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, in First Presbyterian Church in Carbondale. All are welcome to attend to celebrate Jane’s life.
